Saturday Evening "Hootenanny" Concert at Coaster Theatre
Sunday Morning Fun Run/Walk on the beach at 2nd St.
Visitors to this 49th Annual Sandcastle Contest enjoyed a primo day at the beach. The weather was perfect. The crowd was big - roughly estimated at 7000 - but traffic moved smoothly. Friday from 6-8pm was the Buckets & Shovels Dinner with former Blazer Jerome Kersey at the Chamber. About 150 dinners were served at $5 each for a plate of Spaghetti, Chowder and/or Salad. The dinner featured a slideshow of past Sandcastle Contests and Posters presented by George Vetter. Saturday morning at 8am the sculptors began on the beach with judging around 1pm. Cars had to be off the beach by 3pm or earlier depending on the sand and the tide. At noon, 500 cars were counted on the beach with more coming than going. T-shirts and small posters sold out on the beach along with food. There were 41 total plots with a record 7 Master plots. A Master Plot is a team that has won at previous or other competitions. Saturday evening's concert at the Coaster Theatre featuring local talent was a near sellout. Paul Dueber & Bill Steidel headed up a collection of performers for what Paul called a "Hootenanny". Admission was $5 with kids 12 & under free. On Saturday evening at 8pm, approximately 150 people took part in the Bonfire with smores on the beach by Tolovana Inn. Sunday morning at 9am was the Fun Run (5K Run or Walk). Registration began at 8am at the end of Second Street (Downtown). 49 people participated.
